Gmail you can... from any wap enabled phone... I think its m.gmail.com I know I've checked my mail from there before... as for Opera... I don't know

Verizon phones don't do Java. They use BREW instead, which is incompatible. I haven't heard of Opera or any Google apps for BREW yet.
