OEM-battery only safeguard chip?

Gertie Knock-Off

Anyone know if the circuitry in the OYSTR requires you to get an OEM battery when it wears out, and is it somehow connected to DRM functionality? (No third party batteries like the K3245 non OEM sold on eBay?)

BTW the OYSTR casing doesn't seem to be painted. Pearl white and Black, nothing more. Seen at Virgin Megastore.
