Just got my phone yesterday... The back light does stay on during charging on mine too. I did get a 'charging complete' message when the phone was powered off but haven't looked for that message with the phone powered on.
I think since the average life expectancy of a phone is only a few years there is no significant issue. The backlight should last at least that long. If the technology is anything like computer monitors, we'll have no trouble. My monitors are several years old and stay lit a lot longer than my phone.
