keypad backlight problem?

I just bought the KRZR today at Verizon and have been playing around with it when I noticed a potential problem.

I think my keypad backlight might be screwy, as it does not always come on, even when I first open the phone, or am typing. Even if I put the setting on "Always On" it doesn't always turn on when I open the phone or press a key.

I'm charging the phone now to see if it's a "low battery" type of issue, but I'm afraid it's a defect and annoyed at the prospect of having to go back to Verizon tomorrow and get it replaced.

Anyone else have this problem? Does everyone else's keypad backlight seem to work when the phone's open and they're pressing buttons?

I think the phone has an ambient light sensor, so the keypad only lights up when there is dim/no light, regardless of the settings. Not sure if this can be turned off though.

There is indeed a light sensor! (i just checked!)
It doesnt turn on the keypad light unless its dark around. Good powersave feature!

Here is a pic of where the Light Sensor is located:

I didn't even notice this until pointed out. Checked it out by 1) holding the phone by a lamp and pressing a button --- no backlight; 2) holding my finger over the pointed to sensor and pressing and button and BOOM--- light comes on. This is pretty damn sweet.

Krzr == Crazy cool.
