The right thing to do is to try to find the owner. He may even get a reward.

If I lost mine I would report it and have VZW block the ESN. If the owner does this all he has is a nice looking paper weight that can't be activated.

If it were me, I would look at the contacts and try to find the owner. Look for listings like "Home" or "ICE-name" (In Case of Emergency). Hope your friend does the right thing.
