Verizon Wireless offers world phone to businesses

By Sinead Carew

NEW YORK, June 10 (Reuters) - Verizon Wireless on Thursday said it had begun selling corporate travelers a Samsung Electronics phone designed to work on mobile networks around the world.

The wireless venture of Verizon Communications (VZ) and Vodafone Group Plc (VOD), plans to begin selling the Samsung A790 phone to other retail customers in the next few months, according to Verizon spokeswoman Brenda Raney.

Hundreds of corporate clients had asked Verizon Wireless for a phone they can travel with, according to Jim Gerace, also a Verizon spokesman, who said this is a small but lucrative market.

Motorola to launch the first dual-band phone

http://news.ft.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=FT ... »

I know it's a long URL but looks like China will get the A840 first them VZW later in this year (article claims; "The new "world phone", which can be used on both the GSM and CDMA networks, will become available by the end of the third quarter, potentially helping China Unicom, the country's second largest mobile operator, to lure more customers to its slow-growing CDMA services."

The article also missed the fact that Samsung has released a CDMA/GSM for VZW Enterprise Customers already, so technically, Motorola is not first.

We'll Never See It

Motorola can just keep announcing new handsets because that is their core competancy as opposed to developing and delivering hardware.

They are beginning to define the true definition of vaporware.

Upgrade

I am so excited about this phone, I am not eligible for an upgrade until April, with the V710 coming out next month (if it does) that'll mean that by when I'm eligible for an upgrade this will be the phone that I'll be getting, cuz it'll be newer... I hope it comes out early next yr.

A840 vs V710

A840 and V710 of Motorola are almost the same...one lacks bluetooth,AMPS and the other excludes oversea GSM...As i learned from CTIA wireless 2004's news, i think A840 is intended for local CDMA network ie(Verizon, Sprint PCS, Metro PCS) and capable of roaming to Non-US GSM freqency.Probably, Verizon will be the first as it was started international plan. it may be followed by Sprint PCS. So CDMA has brighter side...

Moto A840 or Samsung SCHA790 First?

The Samsung SCHA790, listed as "The first phone in the world that works on North American CDMA networks and also GSM networks overseas" on this site was first approved on Oct 22, 2003 by the FCC.

Any further news on the Samsung and/or whether the Moto will come first as it's listed as being released 2nd half of 2004 vs. the Samsung's listing as "tentative?

Prelim thoughts on which is better?
