Motorola drops supplier of MPX. Is the 2005 release in Jeopardy?

I've seen this story all over the web today.

Motorola will no longer place any ODM orders for Microsoft Windows-based smartphones with Taiwan-based handset makers, according to the Chinese-language Commercial Times report

Apparently Motorola wants to bring the production in-house. That could be why this phone has been continually delayed. Will it ever see the light of day?

touch screen?

one more question- anyone see a problem with a touch screen touching your face while you talk? is there a way to deactivate this feature while on a call with the phone opening the old fashioned way?

Moto misses the mark... again!

No EDGE. Screwed up keyboard. Windows mobile. All deal killers.

When I first saw stories on this and saw the pics at my local Cingular store, I thought I finally found the perfect phone. Now I could consolidate my iPod, Nokia 6620, and Zaurus into a single device for work. But now, I think I'll just suffer with my 6620.

For a serious PDA/phone, it needs EDGE. Straight GPRS doesn't cut it. The keyboard does not look like it'd be easy to type on with it's messed up layout (why didn't they learn from the Nokia 3650?). And Windows Mobile is crap.

I was hoping they'd use Linux with iTunes/iPhoto support. And now with PalmSource's latest announcement, PalmOS 6 could run on top of such an OS.

And I wonder if Moto is going to pul...

Why keep the release date under wraps?

I'm going to buy a different phone if they (Sprint with their 550 and Moto with the MPx) don't let me know if this phone is coming out in the near future or not.

I would be willing to bet others are in the same boat as me, willing to wait, unless that wait continues to be indefinite...

over in the "MotoSummer 2004" discussion:

Wha' happened to the V600?

Last night, my V600 was lost or stolen. I went to get it replaced at Cingular, and they told me it was no longer carried. I just got the phone 2 months ago. They said Moto discontinued it because of problems. Since I had the replacement insurance (I didn't remember buying it, but okay ... I thought), I figured I would be able to somehow get an equivalent replacement. They told me they did not have any V600s in the system and I would have to settle for the non-Bluetooth V400. Anyone know what is going on with this phone? Thanks!

NO HIGHSPEED GPRS Solution!!!

How can Motorola attempt to compete with the HP, Nokia, etc. solutions if they don't have a valid highspeed data solution? WiFi is nice when it's available in the area. With networks currently testing their 3G networks, Moto should be on the frontline ready to capitalize.

The Nokia communicator: Wifi, EDGE
The HP PPC Phone: Wifi, EDGE
Treo 650: sdio wifi, EDGE
etc...

I would at least have thought that since Moto delayed release of the MPx, they would have done something smart like introduce UTMS/HPS... something or other to out shine all the others hands down.

Well, I'm going to take a wait and see attitude with the next generation of Moto products b/c dropping $300-400 (maybe more w/ contract) every 6-8 months for someones p...

speech recognition with bluetooth

Why is that the MPX220 can't use speech recognition for dialing with a bluetooth headset? The RAZR V3 can. I'm thinking it's MS Mobile Edition limitation, but does anyone know for certain?
Thanks in advance. MOH

MPx 300

These things have definitely cropped up on eBay.
(some for a staggering amount of money!)

Here's on example:

What's the deal exactly?
Are GSM phones really so simple that you can pull any ol' GSM phone from anywhere, switch that SIM chip out and you've got a working phone in the US?

I know I've asked this before and been told "Yes", but it just so feels like there should be a catch.

Maybe I'll search thru the "Techs & Trends" forum and maybe ask this there.

Lame keyboard layout...

😕 Why did they have to ruin a nice bundle of features with an artsy fartsy keyboard layout? What's wrong with the RIM or even the A630 keyboards?

If you're hardcore enough to want this thing, are you really going to want that keyboard?

Anyone Testing the MPX? Need Real Feedback

We are evaluating smartphones and the TREO 650 is the favorite. This looks promising but how does it really function in relation to the 650? Who will carry it first? When can we get it?

Expensive phone
