data plan mandatory?

I have been looking at the Q9h and I think I'm going to buy one whenever they finally come out on AT&T, but I have a question. I already have unlimited text messaging, and then main reason I want a phone like this is for the QWERTY keyboard.

That being said, my question is, when I go to buy this phone, will I have to purchase a data plan for the internet and e-mail even though I don't want it? This may sound stupid, but I've heard some people say you have to buy a data plan and some say you don't.

Thanks for any replies.

10/29 new bs date?

I read today on other forums that they have scheduled the "official" release date of the AT&T Q Global for 10/29...........cross everything you got.

Q9h

I'm having huge problems with this phone. I can't even get the software cd to play. It won't sync to my pc, and it doesn't recognize my sd half the time. Anyone have one of these yet?

Motorola Q9 Global Pricing

According to "Boy Genius", for a two-year contract, the pricing will be $299.99 plus a $50 mail-in rebate.

Even given all the delays, any tips on negotiating with AT&T on being able to upgrade early? I have a Treo 650 that I would like to upgrade to the Q9 Global.

I have given up and given in!

Yesterday, my store manager received notice that release has been delayed another week to 10/29. At that point, she showed me the Tilt and I bought it. Not what I want, I want the Q, but it is what exists. If they get the Q in 30 days, I'll switch. If they don't get it in 30 days, my guess is they never will within a reasonable time and so I have a good phone. I just don't like settling. It goes against the grain.

7 Months later

Well its nearly 7 months later and we are still no closer to having the phone we all want. The EU, AU and CN markets have the Q9h with 2100Mhz radio, but the US the home market for Moto is still waiting.

Its a sad commentary when the US continues to lag behind the world because companies are either too greedy or too stupid to see they need to strike while the iron is hot.

In the last 7 months I wonder how many phones have been released in Japan vs the USA? I wonder.

In stores this week

My local sales rep stated they have been told the phone will be in local stores next week. They were not sure if announcement will be made this Friday and available on Premier then. However, this ties up with the previous October 9 through 15 indications and the Tilt/Kaiser announcement today (see HoFo) that the phone will be "out" 10/05. I would expect both phones to be released together as they would provide options to PDA purchasers (will buy one or the other) and would create quite the splash.

All of this could be more "smoke".

Delayed again?

Spoke to local AT&T store and business customer service today. Both said release has been delayed again. Per store - will be in store on October 5. Per CS - Early October.

This is the most amazing process regarding the launch of a new product I have ever seen. It is no wonder Motorola is a mess and AT&T.

AT&T Release Date

According to my local store manager yesterday (Friday 8/30), his system shows release/announcement on 9/21 with drop ship to stores on 9/25. This was after I showed him the AT&T Price sheet with the Q9 Global on it (he had not seen the sheet) and pointed out the phone on their new rebate forms that they had just received. Of course, he could not promise that these would actually happen.
