Does TMO "require" data plan with Dash

A friend of mine has the TMO MDA. When he bought the phone the TMO rep told him that the phone required the data plan in order to use WIFI even if you just wanted to use home/work wireless networks.

I understand how you'd need a data plan to access TMO hotspots or to use an EDGE data connection but if you just wanted to use the WIFI capabilities of home or corporate network you shouldn't have to buy the data plan. To prove the point, we swapped out his SIM for mine (my phone is an ancient Samsung e105, translation: no data features). His phone was able to pick up our company's wireless network without a hitch.

The problem: his TMO rep wouldn't sell him the phone unless he also bought the data plan.

Has anyone had any similiar ...

Word Documents

I got the Dash last week and I am , overall happy with it, however I am a little disappointed that it doesn't have a word processor built in 😢 . Does anyone have any information about what kind of software is out there that i can use to edit and create documents that can transfer to Word? I already have Notepad Mobile, but it hardly measures up to Pocket Word.

Does this play video????????

Here is the thing. I love the phone, maybe not so much the software. The problem I am having is with video. I was able to get 40 meg music videos onto the phone, but it wont let me play it back. I played regular .avi and mpeg videos, but neither have worked. What is the deal? These same files worked on my brother's Treo 700w.

Pocket Word? WHere?

I was told that WM5 had Pocket Word, but to my surprise, it doesn't. Is there anyway to use a program to type up notes, or even documents on this device?

Buttons

I'm new to the whole smartphone idea and had a quick question. I find myself using specific keys on my dash alot of often than others. In terms of wear how long can i expect keys to function properly before acting up and or wearing out?

Has anybody had any problems with lag time on the dash?? On a few reviews people have complained about the lag time due to small amount of internal memory??

Unlocked Version?

I read a number of you have purchased unlocked versions to use with cingular. I was wondering where I can find one (other than eBay) and how well the smartphone plan works...do I still get my email pushed like I would with T-Mobile's data plan that one would use with the Dash? Any advice would help. Thanks.

WiFi and Data Package and ring types.

I'm most probably not going to purchase the unlimited data package, but I'm wondering if it's necessary to use the online. Would it be okay if I just used wifi at a hotspot and not necessarily use it on the go when I'm not in a hotspot. Basically I'm wondering if I'll get charged if I try using the internet without having the unlimited data package because I'd most likely be using it exclusively in a hotspot area. Thanks again.

On another note - is there a vibrate/silent feature?

Is there any software worth purchasing for WM5?

WM5 really lacks any creative software - or games. downloads.com has nothing of interest to me, and I can't seem to find any site with software that is mildly useful or entertaining.

i like the phone but plans suck...

i like the phone and all i have a sidekick 2 right now and got the data plan before it went up to 29 (only 20)...i think its stupid they bumped the plan up like that thats rediculous theyre gonna lose customers. But the worst thing is with this smartphone they dont include a descent service plan for it, you have to pay $29 for the internet plus $14 for unlimited texting...THATS REDICULOUS....itll be the day before i upgrade my sk2 to something like that i would never pay that much for texting/internet...ill stick to my $20 and upgrade in 6 months to the Sk3 and still keep that $20 data plan =\...tmobile needs to make a smartphone plan including both texting and internet and all the features they give sidekicks and not go and raise the prices...

Is the Touch Strip for the Volume flawed or is mine broken?

The volume control works very poorly. I have to slam my hand to get the volume screen to atleast appear, and it is impossible to actually lower the volume to under 50%

Ringtones!

I tried both the MDA and SDA and unlike my Nokia smartphone, with their operating system, it was not possible to have mp3 ringtones... how is it on this device? is it possible to have mp3 ringtones right off the memory card as a ringtone or do I have to buy an application in order to be able to do that.

Achilles Heel

As I said before this phone rocks specs wise however it would seem to have an abomindably slow response time. I have a Cingular 8125 with the same processor but LOADS more memory and it lags when I have a multitabbed browser open (OPERA). With 23MB of memory and such a slow processor albeit a "more efficient" WM OS I can't imagine it being very functional for multitasking, or checking email with Windows Media Player in the background.
