Don't blame the service provider for the phone's problem. You obviously have a bad phone so send it back to Costco.
As to which phone is better it's all personal choice and you should pick out one that has features that you want and go with it. Some phones do perform better but the diff is so small that only a test engineer would notice. Now I know some may say that they had some bad phones before but hey, there's bound to be a few bad phones in a few millions so don't judge the brand by 1 bad sample - I had a Toyota that broke down in less than a year but I still buy Toyota!
