Phone upgrade info needed please.
Please excuse what I'm sure is a very basic question, but I've searched the site and cannot find the answer.
My wife and I each have 5190 phones on the Cingular network. Hers seems to be starting to fail so I'd like to replace it with another simple, unflashy but newer phone and it seems the 3360 looks good. The question is, what is involved with a phone upgrade as far as the carrier? Say I buy a 3360 on Ebay - what then? Just switch the sim, or do I need Cingular to do something? Are the 5190s even compatible with anyting newer?

5190 is probably a TDMA phone with no SIM.
If you buy one of those phones from ebay, you would have to purchase a SIM from cingular and they can activate it, unless it is the TDMA version of it (I've seen both). If it is a TDMA phone they can just program it.
Your better off buying your phone from Cingular so that you know for sure it will work and will be supported through warranties.
The GSM plans are generally better values than the old TDMA plans anyway, so you should look into upgrading.

This a old thread, but I thought I'd Correct some info in case someone finds it while searching.
A 5190 is a 1900mz only gsm phone with a Sim card. It's so old now that cingular may want to upgrade the Sim card anyway. But one shouldn't have to pay for that. A current replacement for this phone would be a 3595 or a 6010 both available for free with a two year extension. I agree that if you signed up with a 5190 a plan change might be in order also as newer plans ofter better features for less money.
