Im thinking of purchasing this phone and was hoping if anyone knows for sure what services will work for sure with the cingular network?
I called cingular and they said voice calls shouldnt be a problem but they could not guarantee voicemail ,text or picture messaging. Is this the case or do I need to download settings or something ,Im confused and any help is grateful.

Voice mail & text won't be a problem at all. SMS will use the same channels the voice signal runs on, so you're set there. MMS on the otherhand, requires MediaNet access, which is where you'll run into problems. Since it's an S60 smartphone, have them give you the settings for the 6682 (the closest equivalent phone), & see if those work.

WiFi on the phone is not dependent on the carrier.. as long as you have a wireless network to connect to.. different from Cell service
so yes.. it should work fine

Cingular is infamous for blocking MMS reception on non-supported phones, even with MediaNet working correctly. You generally get an error message regarding "MMS Adaptation" with video clips, or it shrinks the size of the picture message you are receiving. I got this on my unlocked SE W810i until recently (because Cingular is about to start carrying it). I still get this error message on an unlocked Nokia 6131.

Can anyone confirm, for sure, that they can receive video clips on the Cingular network with a N80?

Everything will work except 3g(UMTS) so you won't be able to make video calls on the european version. My brother purchased one overseas and is using it with cingular, he can send/recieve texts and picture msgs. Voicemail alerts come up as they should(little voicemail symbol). Other than UMTS your fine.As for the settings, you can go to nokiausa.com and click on the n80 then theres a link for "Support for Owners" and it sends you the settings through a configuration text. If that doesnt work you can go to support.cingular.com and select anohter S60 device and follow those steps to set up media net.
BTW if you don't know this yet, the N80 will be released on cingular, I'd give it a couple of months, but that version will support video calls....

Actually, there's some doubt as to whether this phone will actually be carried by Cingular (see the N80 forum). I'm not sure what you've heard about video calling, but Cingular does not yet have anything close to the necessary technology for that. Also, the N80 does not have more than one camera (such as the 6680, which DOES support video calling), so I'm not sure why you think it will support video calling. Cingular IS developing a video calling feature, but it won't be rolled out in anything more than a few labs until after the UMTS network is national (or at least covers 75% of the current network footprint). I'd expect that one of the EVDO carriers (VZW or Sprint) is closer to a video calling feature, but as far as I know, even the...

Ah, duh. . . I just realised the N80 does have a camera on the front (at least, it looks that way), but I don't see any mention of video calling anywhere on the Nokia site . . . anyone else see it? And is that actually a video camera on the front? If not what the heck is it?
