Don't worry I figured it out. I had more than 1 item on my paired device list.
When there is more than 1 item on your paired devices list the phone does not know which one to conect with automatically so in this instance you need to select. When there is only 1 devie on your list then there is no problem for the software in the phone to know which one to connect to. Now I am not sure if there are multiple handsfree devices on a given phone since I do not have that worry at this time but I would guess based on my solution that the user would have to pick the specific handsfree device from the list of paired devices.
When I deleted the unused item it then began pairing automatically with my handsfree device without any problems... such a simple answer that I stumbled across.
