Go with a Nokia Windows Phone 8 device (Lumia 620) if you're looking for an entry level Smarphone (Free or low cost on a sub $40/month contract)

You will be more satisfied with it's performance.

Don't take the 520, it has WP7, AKA outdated.

If you really have to go with an Android device then please consider at least one of this phones.

Alcatel One touch M'POP (Free with Tigo on a $25 contract)
Android 4.1.2
4" 480*800 TFT LCD Capacitive Multitouch Screen (Dragontrail glass) 16.7M colors
1GHz Mediatek 6575, 512MB RAM, 4GB built in storage, 4GB micro SD included (up to 32GB)
5MP fixed focus camera, 720p HD video, no flash.
VGA front camera

Huawei Ascend Y300 (Free with Tigo on a $25 contract)
Android 4.1.2
4" 480*80...

gonna go to Tigo, I've checked some promos they have..

I don't know if I will be able to make it with the $40 plan.. (un poco socado por el Adelanto đŸ˜ĸ ) and I was thinking about the lumia 520.. but you're right it's outdated ☚ī¸

I also made a little research about the Alcatel Mpop, but I was a little concernd because it's a Alcatel..

So I think it would either the Mpop or Huawei.. Which one would you choose?

I will write a review of the MPOP on my blog.
The phone feels good (if a bit cheap), I liked the rubbery back cover of the phone, Is about 11mm thick but doesn't feel big in your hand at all, it is really comfortable to hold and use. I'd like it to have more RAM because I run several apps at the same time. (512 is good enough)

The WVGA display is bright enough to be used under direct sunlight (brightness all the way up).
The 1GHz Mediatek Processor under the hood is superior to it's qualcomm or samsung equivalents (MSM 8255 or 8655, hummingbird) but the graphics performance of the phone is not that good (You can play GTA Vice city at medium settings from a class 10 Micro SD card with no problems), specially 2d performance, wich means t...

It has a 4 inch IPS LCD WVGA display. It is a better than the one on the Alcatel MPOP (Not much brighter)
About the hardware, I liked better the other phone (Alcatel One Touch MPOP), the Y300 has too many hard angles, is not too uncomfortable to use, but the other one feels better for sure.
I've use this phone for a few days only but it seems to have better graphics performance (Almost no stutters with facebook msngr YAY). General performance is about the same, even though it has a dual core processor it is an ARM5. Battery life is about the same.

The camera... So so. I was expenting more of it because it has an auto focus camera (this one has a flash). Low light performance is bad but the flash helps.
Video recording is limited to VGA...

The Alcatel first, and it is the one I'd stay with because it proved to be a solid device. (I recommend you to install poweramp or other dedicated music player, the volume of music played through earphones is anemic, it is a bit of a software issue because the ringers speaker and speakerphone have good volume)

I like the soft touch finish of the back and it survived a few drops from my desk without suffering any damage.

It is an affordable device, not as pretty as other phones but considering it's price, it is a really attractive device.

You should check the screen on the Huawei Y300 first, it is a bit better. If you can pass the phone's ugly/boring looks, maybe it will be the phone of your choice. General software performance is ju...

The Alcatel has better call quality (noticeably better) if that's important for you.

The built in microamplifier for the headphones has better volume in the Huaweii, and general software performance is a bit better as well.

I had them both for a few weeks and they perform wonderfully considering their retail price
OT MPOP $106 and the Y300 is $113 if you have a line and wish to buy the phone for such line (I bought the alcatel first because I got rid of my old Infuse 4G samsung, I'm still waiting for the phone I bought on ebay)

TAN AGOTAOS AHORITA!
So you will have to wait till Friday, tigo will bring new phones.

The guy is looking for a phone and has a low budget. A local carrier is giving them away for free with a $23/month 18 month contract.
I've try them both and they do a lot considering their price (even the full retail price)

I wish you could give us an objective opinion at least once.

I wouldn't take them on a $50+ contract, definitely no. But the guy is getting them for free with a $20 monthly service (which will include about 250MB of data per month). Not the end of the world having one of those phones, both are well built and sturdy.
THEY ARE CHEAP PHONES HOWEVER.

If I was in his situation I'd pay the extra $100 one time payment for the Nokia (If I really had to go with the basic plan).
He doesn't need an smartphone, most of us don't. He "wants" an smartphone. After 18 months he will be able to upgrade to a GS4 mini for free, or just by paying a minimum fee.
Having a huawei phone isn't the end of the world.
