How hard is it to convert from Gingerbread to ICS or OSes in general?

I have a Samsung Galaxy S II and current reports are that TMobile is going to push out ICS upgrade for this phone next week. For one I am guessing I may not have the choice whether or not to upgrade but as this is my first smartphone device all of this stuff is new to me.
