Who's making the best Android phones?

I am seriously considering switching to an Android phone. But there are so many choices.

-Are some manufacturers doing a better job than others at making these phones?

Everyone has a decent handset here and there, but HTC tends to hit it out of the park every single time (with a few exceptions that are a result of them making a cheaper phone to appease the carriers).

HTC just makes really quality stuff... might not have the best screen or "fastest" processor (they actually have the fastest processor when you factor Android into the equation, and not just pure potential), but they have very high quality of everything top to bottom, especially fit and finish.

I would say HTC or Samsung. I'm a fan of the Galaxy S, and waiting for the Galaxy S II to come out in the US. But HTC has made some good phones, regardless of OS.

Thanks Hobble, IrishCarBomb, and Jellz.

This is the kind of info you can't find in the specs.

More than once, I have been horrified, after making a decision based on specifications, that I have bought a poorly thought-out, badly put together device!

Hobble:
What do you think about battery life? I read comment of folks not being able to get through a day with some phones. Surely this is only with very heavy use, eh?

Battery life on near all androids are poor. On my dinc I'm using an extended battery and my battery life went way up, obviously. But if you install a custom rom and put in a custom kernel your battery life will improve. That and use juice defender.

An important thing about battery life is managing features effectively. Turn stuff you aren't using off, etc. Some people leave everything on and that can cripple a battery of any phone.

But yeah, Androids and battery life don't mix too well.

Battery life for most Android phones is 1 working day... I have never had a problem getting one day of use out of my Android phones, have had the G1, Nexus One, G2, Vibrant, XT720, Milestone, and several others I am probably forgetting.

Simply looking at battery usage, my display was on for 3-4 hours every day (aka I was using it 3-4 hours)... I take the phone off charger at 8AM and it goes back on at midnightish... never had a problem with any of those phones making it that long.

Only time I feel a battery crunch is excessive web surfing or video playing.
