I have a rooted G1 and a Rooted MyTouch 3G. I don't think I could ever have a phone that wasn't rooted at this point. First of all there is full multitouch in the system which is something that on the Sense UI phones have had without root. Also you have the plus of Apps2SD and FTP bluetooth which is awesome. I was dying tp upgrade to the Nexus, but now I think I'm holding out for something better. Try going to CyanogenMod's Wiki page. This is the ROM I have installed on both phones and I love it. The system just runs better after root on the earlier models of android phones. It was very simple with these instructions and if you need help just send me a message. Only took about 20 minutes for me to do on the G1 and about 10 on the MT3G.

Depending on the ROM you go for, there are speed differences. I enjoy the SUPER D roms with Ram hack. Refuse to use anything else.

I was thinking about rooting my myTouch and I was wanting to know how difficult it was. I know I need to get a Gold Card ( I think its a memory card) and a sd card reader but I just want to learn more information about it before I do it.

With Cyanogen's page you can do this without the GoldCard. It is actually really simple. Takes about 20 minutes to do and all you really have to remember is to run the backup in case you ever want to reverse it.

They have a CyanogenMod wiki that pretty much explains everything and it has a FAQ in case you have questions that haven't been been answered in these forms.
