Newbie question - Droid X2 OS v# ?????

First off hey to everyone. New here and hope to learn a lot. I just read the whole article about Samsung winning the ok to sell the new Nexus "mini" for now that will have the new Android OS, Jelly bean. I want to know what I have, Gingerbread/Icecream Sandwich, what gives ? I know you have to do the entire OS update through a Wifi connection if I'm not mistaken, but I'm used to normal PCs and basically installing whatever you want, what else can be gained if anything from my phone I have now until I can upgrade in a year ☹️ ? If you got your phone a year ago, you probably have something in the 2.X range, so eclair, froyo or gingerbread. The only way to know for sure is to look at the OS version in your settings app.

The updates can sometimes be done over the air, but my phones (both versions of the Xperia) required a physical connection to my PC via USB.

There are ways in which you can upgrade your phone "unoficially," but unlike with PC, there are often root-level restrictions to prevent you from doing this. Getting around those restrictions is possible, but way out of the scope of this response.

As for what's to gain... well, as with a PC, that depends upon your phone and what it can handle. Newer versions of Android generally come with bug fixes an...
