If you are deciding on a GSM phone then I would go w/Sprint. Cheaper internet rates. When it comes to speed both Verizon and Sprint are implimenting EVDO but Sprint's is faster. Unfortunately the TREO cannot use EVDO.

Ok, maybe this is just me, but why would anyone that is deciding on a GSM phone want to go with Sprint???? Sprint is CDMA!!!!!

And Sprint's EVDO will not be faster than Verizon as it is the same technology. Last I checked, Sprint was not going straight to Rev A, so that means they will begin with Rev 0. Rev 0 is what Verizon has, so they will be equal. The only way to make it faster is to go to Rev A.

From my understanding of their data infrastructure, Sprint is overlaying their 1xRTT only markets with EVDO Rev A and bypassing the Rev O altogether. In the EVDO Rev 0 markets, the network is being upgraded to Rev A. I'd skip the Treo 650 and go straight to the Treo 700p/wx as it has 3 significant upgrades over the 650.
1. Almost twice the memory for user storage
2. 1.3 Megapixel camera versus 640x480
3. EVDO Rev 0. The 650 only supports 1xRTT.

Select the best provider in your city and don't base it on the handset. The Treo 650 is almost the same speed on either Cingular's EDGE data network or Verizon's Express Network. The Cingular speed is slightly higher, but their latency is also slightly higher. But the difference is so slight that anyone that can tell the difference without using a software benchmark probably spends too much time on their phone. 😳

The e-mail functionality is identical on either network. Neither limits the functionality any differently. Cingular's data plans are cheaper than Verizon's, so that is a good reason to go with them. Plus, if you are on a data call and a voice call comes in, the device will prompt you as to whether or not you want to inter...

Verizon's 650 has email attachments locked on the email application that comes installed on the phone. However you can install VeraMail from the DVD that comes with your phone and that allows attachments. The reason I mention this is you cannot share any videos you shoot with the phone directly from the phone without VersaMail. Not really a big issue for some but email attachments can be a bigger issue for others. Let me know how you make out.

Email attachments are not locked on the email application that comes with the Treo 650. I've seen the threads between you and freedomrep and gotta say its entertaining. I work at VZW in dept that deals with the syncing of Treos'. From what I've read it seems that you've never went beyond the 3rd party versamail app on the CD that came with the Treo. 1st you'll need to install datavizs' "Documents to go" from the CD. This is for word /excel docs. 2nd you'll need adobes pocket reader for PDF files from adobe.com. lastly make sure you have the appropriate reader for videos also. I dont know what format your doing but it sounds to me as if you have no 3rd party attachment veiwers installed on the Treo at all. The Treo doesnt come with any instal...

If you want a Palm then wait until the Treo i700 comes out. Its going to be Windows 5.0 based but worth it in my opinion. The device will still look much the same as the 650 though. If your a palm guy and like the OS then I guess the 650 is ok. Sometime around DEC-Jan you can expect it. The palm OS is buggy and slow. I work at VZW and the windows PDAs are getting really good. Just an FYI if you go to the palmone website under support you'll find that there are several, what palm has as OS upgrades called "updaters" Cingular has some and VZW has some. These come out every month or so after Palm has discovered glitches in there software and have to correct it. Microsoft none. I'm not advocating Windows, I'm just trying to help.

Hey Swingkid,

I've had experience with both carriers using the Treo 650 and here are my thoughts.

The others that have responded gave great insights on the phone, but this is my 2 cents worth.

Cingular: everyone that I know (including my experience) has had a difficult time (to say the least). The phone constantly resets itself. I live in the Bay Area and it has a reputation of being a piece of garbage. The people I know have returned it time and time again.

Verizon: I currently have my 3rd Treo since May of this year. I live only a few blocks from downtown San Francisco and every carrier gets full bars in my apartment. All of a sudden I start dropping calls (more dropped calls in 1 week than the previous 14 months on Veri...

On the GSM Treo 650s, the problem with the constant resets was isolated to the sim trays. It left a little bit of space between the sim card and the contact points for sim card reader in the phone.
Palm has redesigned the sim card tray and is offering it for free for any customer that wants it.
It is posted on the Palm website also and on sites like treocentral.com, howardforums.com and mytreo.net as well as here on several threads...
