Thinking about a Palm Centro (At&T)-Questions?

Hi everyone. I'm thinking about a Palm Centro for my first smartphone. I'm still in the dark ages of useing a regular phone. My wife has a BB 8700 series which she loves and I like that she gets her emails instantly, but the as a phone it stinks. I know the Centro is a completely different format, but I like it's size, price point, etc. This maybe a dumb question - Does the Centro also have email? If I have the centro turned on and someone sends me an email, would it show up instantly like my wifes BB? I know my wife has a BB package and an ATT wireless email and her business email also goes to her BB. Does the centro do the same thing? Again, sorry for the dumb questions, I'm a novice.

Thanks - JP

It's a much better 1st smartphone than a BB. The e-mail is very similar. It works slightly differently.

The palm centro is the same junk as any other device with a palm os. Dont buy it, It is just a different wrapper. Blackberry is far superior to most devices. the palm company is having financial problems, why would you put money in a sinking ship?

( blackberry)is a solid company and they stand behind the product. Did ya ever wander why the blackberry cost so much more than the other phones? Next to Blackberry, I would get a blackjack 1 or 2.

The Palm has thousands of programs that you can load on it and syncs with your PC much easier than the BB. The touchscreen makes it much more versatile to use. The fact that Palm is in some economic troubles doesn't render their devices obsolete. Besides, the Palm operating system is made by another company, Access.

The BB's main advantage is the good email integration, so if you're a heavy corporate email user go with the BB, otherwise the Palm is a great choice.

I guess I did not answer your question. Your mail can be Pushed to the centro. You will have to use xpressmail by AT&T or you will need to have a blackberry plan . alternately, you will need to poll for your mail. This means your email will be setup on your phone bu it will not be automatically be setn ( called Pushed) you will need to select send/receive to get your mail. If your mail is pushed you will need to subscribe to a data plan starting at about $30.00 on top of the voice plan. If you have a lot of mail, an unlimited package is your best option. If you choose to poll the mail server (you initiate the call. you control how many times your mail is received on the phone. this option works for the folks who get most of their mail sent...

I had the Sprint one for a very brief time. The Centro, as small as it is, does it all! E-mail, camera, video, music, instant Messaging, the whole nine!

I've been using a Centro for about the last 7 months, and I love it. Haven't had anyproblems with it that weren't user errors, or a simple setting. Plus you get access to loads of programs, many of which are free and you can find many websites from which to get software that will do just about anything you need. Blackberries are nice, but one thing, trackball malfunction. I've seen many of them with worn out trackballs. Go with a touchscreen phone, Windows phones have slow response, Palm's are great.

One other note: Read the manual, and synch it to your computer. You will understand how to use the device once you read, and you wont have to worry about lost data if something happens to the device. (Words of Experience)

From the response it appears that you are using a starter phone that may have limited capabilites. You are correct on one thing, all BB are focused on Push Email, that your wife uses. This is great for my clients who need instant access to real time emails. If your emails are not time sensative, I would recommend the Palm Centro. Like the previous posts, Palm has been around for years, and there are several programs from financial calculators to my favorite Ringo for my ringtones. Plus Palm offers threated text to keep messaging simple and easy.

I seems like to made up your mind, you like the size and the price. Most places offer a 30 day exchange policy. Try out the phone, take it for a test drive and go from there.

Hope this helps,
