iMessages...whats the point? (Longish)

As I understood it iMessages were free. Yet my iMessages were/are being pulled out of my text allotment with VZW.
Yes the message bubbles were blue, yes it says iMessage where you enter text, yes I was on a data network 3G/Wi-Fi, yes iMessages is turned on in settings, and yes the others have iOS 5 devices.
Well is as many weeks I called VZW because I'm fast approaching my text message limit and they assure me this isn't possible. "Well I'm looking at my text message details right now and there are about 65 messages registered without any description as to what they are. Domestic text, MMS, etc." VZW "That can't be possible, iMessages use data not SMS. Let me fill out a trouble ticket. But in the mean time for $7 more a month you could get...

Probably a technical glitch. My text amount has dropped significantly, I'm with AT&T though. Verizon probably doesn't allow it. Have you tried disabling iMessage and then re-enabling?

No I didn't try that. And it wasn't suggested from tech support either.
I've asked others with VZW iPhones but they all have unlimited. And as I upgraded to a unlimited message plan it's no worry anymore.
I'm just wondering if it's another example of VZW nickle & dimeing you.

If you go into imessage settings, there is an option to send message as sms wich uses your text messaging plan, yours is most likley enabled. Disable to use via data services.
