Samsung Electronics yesterday announced a new technology for LCD displays that will, for the first time, enable VGA-class resolution in screens smaller than 2.4 inches, allowing a new level of detail and brightness in phone displays. One component of the innovation is a new driver chip that doubles the effective horizontal resolution using sub-pixel rendering (similar to Microsoft's ClearType technology). The other component is a unique 4-color LCD panel that adds white to the usual red, green and, blue sub-pixels. The addition of white compensates for the lack of brightness that usually plagues ultra-high-resolution LCDs. Samsung plans to release high-end phones using the technology in the second half of 2005.

I don't know why this is new. It was announced a couple of months ago.
