Nokia today announced its support for the SD memory card format. The company has applied for membership in the SD Card Association, and will offer SD-compatible mobile devices starting in the 2nd half of 2005. The move is intended to provide compatibility among future multimedia devices from Nokia and other companies. Nokia will continue to rely on the MMC and RS-MMC formats in parts of its lineup. SD cards generally offer faster transfer rates compared to MMC, while MMC cards are thinner and use less power. Many SD-compatible devices are also compatible with MMC cards.
