Lightsquared Under Attack By New GPS Coalition

Today a number of companies and organizations announced that they have formed the Coalition to Save Our GPS, a new group that intends to make sure Lightsquared's business doesn't threaten the country's exiting global positioning system infrastructure and services. The Coalition argues that the Federal Communications Commission's decision to allow Lightsquared to use its satellite spectrum for a terrestrial-based mobile broadband network could have adverse affects on GPS systems and services. To that end, the Coalition published a number of recommendations for the FCC. It believes the FCC and NTIA must ensure that a comprehensive, third-party study be conducted in order to ascertain if there could be interference. It also suggests that Lightsquared be prevented from investing in operational facilities until it is proved — to the satisfaction of existing GPS providers — that there be no harmful interference with GPS services. The Coalition calls this a "matter of critical national interest." Lightsquared plans to deploy a nationwide LTE network and offer it wholesale to service providers.
