Speaking at Mobile World Congress today Google CEO Eric Schmidt said that eventually the smartphone version of Android (Gingerbread 2.3) and the tablet version of Android (Honeycomb 3.0) will merge into one Android platform that can run on all devices with the code name starting with the letter "I." He didn't say when this might happen, nor what features might be carried over or adopted in the unified version of Android. He believes this (and features of Gingerbread in particular) will help solve fragmentation issues.
