Net Neutrality Mildly Impacts Wireless

The Federal Communications Commission today voted in favor of new net neutrality rules for broadband networks, and included several provisions for wireless internet service providers. Under the new rules, wireless providers would not be able to block users from accessing any web site. Wireless providers also wouldn't be allowed to block internet calling services that make use of wireless broadband data connections (or any competitive service). The providers would also have to publicly disclose their network management practices. However, the providers would have the say-so to manage their networks in order to deal with congestion. The net neutrality bill was voted in by 3 to 2, down party lines with Democrats in favor of it. The Democrat-proposed legislation will have to clear the House of Representatives, however, which will be controlled by Republicans come 2011.

Keep your

Governmental hands off!

This can turn into a free speech issue real fast!
Government hands off Comcast's internet!

Fixed that for ya...
The government isn't the threat, despite what Fox News tells you. The massive corporations that want to take over the internet and decide what you can and can't do on it are.
...
If the government can in any way start denying service to either a provider, customer or a certian web site, then why is that not censorship? Why is that not Washington preventing protected free speech?

Touch My Internet Junk and I'll Have You Arrested !

i don't see why Comcast, at&t or any of the other lame gatekeepers think that they have the right to tamper with the internet. that's like tampering with the environment, you just don't do it, cough (BP). who are you to tell people who pay you more that they have more of a right to have sufficient bandwidth and space over some kid in a library computer lab somewhere or a family streaming a net-flix movie and the ps3? SUPPORT NET NEUTRALITY!

I think they got a good compromise

It continues to amaze me how many people really think that cellular internet can be treated the same way as wired internet. I think the commission did some good things here. Wireless traffic management cannot be accomplished with one-size-fits-all declarations.

As long as similar traffic types receive similar prioritization and similar pricing, things will work out fine. If carrier supported services start to get price breaks and "fast lane" benefits, then I will start complaining.

The carrier needs to be the pipe, but in wireless it cannot be a "dumb" pipe. It has to be a smart pipe.

Not enough..

For wireless it still leaves it open for the carriers to block apps..
