Renesas Intros NFC Chip for Smartphones

Renesas Electronics, the company which recently acquired Nokia's wireless modem business, today announced a new near-field communication microcontroller system-on-a-chip that is bound for smartphones and other mobile devices. Renesas says the chip confirms to the proper standards, and measures 0.22mm. It will be able to power contactless payments and other wireless financial transactions. In addition to the hardware, Renesas says that it will provide equipment makers with the software they need to complete their NFC-enabled products. The chip will sample by March with mass production scheduled for July. The chip has a suggested retail price of $5.
