Visa has certified a microSD card-based contactless payment system made by DeviceFidelity. The system allows Visa card issuers to install a Visa mobile payment application onto a special microSD card. The card can then be inserted into a smartphone and used for contactless payments. Visa says the technology involved has been tested extensively to assure that the user's financial data is kept secure. The technology is compatible with the Visa-based contactless payment readers that are already installed in retail locations across the country. Card issuers can also work Visa's application into their own mobile app, allowing for real-time account alerts. According to Visa, the system works with the BlackBerry 9650 Bold, Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant, and the iPhone 4/3GS/3G. (In order to work with the iPhone, users would have to purchase a separate case that contains a memory card and integrates with the iPhone.) Visa plans to support Symbian and Windows Phone 7 in the future.

NFC--

--or NFC-like?

I'm sure I don't like my financial information floating in the air.

iPhone MicroSD?

How does this make since including the iphone in this list. Did the iphone get a micro SD slot that I was unaware of? I think this is a good in theory, but I'd be concerned about security.
The iPhone *doesn't* have a microSD card. Visa didn't explain in the press release how it would work. We've reached out to Visa for an explanation and will update the post accordingly when we hear from them.
