Verizon Wireless Trialling 'Home Phone Connect'

Verizon Wireless is offering customers in New York and Connecticut a trial service that uses Verizon's cellular network to connect landline calls. The service, called Home Phone Connect, requires that customers install a base station in their home. The base station connects to Verizon's cellular network, but rings calls on the premises' landline. Home Phone Connect acts similar to family plans, and customers can add the line for $10 per month with shared minutes, or $20 per month for unlimited minutes. Customers of the service can port their landline number if they wish. Verizon hasn't said if or when it will expand the trial to other regions, or launch the service beyond the initial trial.

$20 for VOIP?

$20 per month for VOIP? What a con job. If I want to use that technology I'll get a Magic Jack for $20 per YEAR!

This doesn't sound like VOIP to me. You would be making calls over Verizons Voice Network, not thier Data Network.

Wireless Local Loop

This technology has been around in non-developed countries for years now. Countries in which there was no landline infrastructure when wireless came out.

I worked on a few of these systems internationally. It's gets really fun when you see people riding a bicycle down the street w/ these base stations in a basket attempting to use them like a mobile phone! It caused a lot of headaches 'cause these stations where never made to perform handoffs, just remain stationary.
