Cellular South to Skip Verizon's LTE Licensing Deal

Cellular South has indicated to the Federal Communications Commission that it will not participate in Verizon Wireless' Long Term Evolution licensing plan for rural regions. Verizon Wireless is offering small, regional carriers the opportunity to build their own LTE networks using Verizon's 700MHz spectrum. The program benefits Verizon in that it won't have to build-out LTE network coverage in those areas, and it benefits smaller carriers because they don't have to purchase the spectrum for their LTE networks. Cellular South said, "Cellular South will focus on building its own business, not helping Verizon expand its network." Cellular South purchased its own 700MHz spectrum in 2008 for $192 million. Further, Cellular South is asking that the FCC mandate that all 700MHz LTE devices be interoperable across networks. Bluegrass Cellular recently announced that it will partake in Verizon's offer to license the 700MHz spectrum and build an LTE network for its customers.

It would make no sense for Cellular South to do this deal with VZW. First, CS got their own spectrum in the recent auctions. Second, and possibly more importantly, CS has been the dominant carrier in Mississippi, while VZW is a relative newcomer in most parts of the state. Why would CS want to build a network for a competing carrier?
I agree. Since they have their own spectrum it makes no sense to use Verizon's. I do not understand why they even made a statement except perhaps to perform a bit of posturing. It doesn't surprise me though. They have that little carrier syndrome....

Verizon is a stack of scumbags.

First they convince the FCC to subsidize the expansion of the rural carriers being taking the stance of a "caring bigger carrier looking out for the little guys" and now they are trying to convince the rural carriers to use thier spectrum with the FCC's blessing.

This is crap.
On the surface, Verizon's offer to let the smaller carriers use its spectrum almost seems generous... but don't forget, the Big Red only looks out for itself. The question becomes: What kind of non compete agreements will a smaller carrier have to si...
