Verizon Wireless is prepared to release a new version of its Network Extender femotcell product, which for the first time will allow users to access mobile data. The new Verizon Wireless 3G Network Extender works with both feature phones and smartphones, and allows users to make/receive phone calls, as well as send/receive SMS/MMS messages, emails, browse the web and stream video, among other things. The 3G Network Extender has a range of about 40 feet, and is made by Samsung. It will work with up to six separate Verizon Wireless devices. According to Verizon Wireless, customers can use the 3G Network Extender free of charge with no changes to their existing monthly plan(s). The Network Extender uses a customer's home broadband network to bridge the wireless device with Verizon's backhaul network. It costs $250.

3G is a non-issue

Adding 3G to these is kind of useless at this point, I think. Pretty much any place you would install one of these already has a WiFi router, and any handset needing 3G data speeds these days also has a WiFi antenna in it. Why bother deploying a second, inferior data stream on top of WiFi?

Nice idea, 5 years behind the curve.

Now, if we can just get feasible LTE femtocells off the ground! That would actually matter.

I've been with Verizon for8 months, and I do get dropped calls, and my data does drop from3G to 1x. And this is all on what is **supposedly** "America's Most Reliable 3G Network"

It's no better, or no worse than AT&T was. AT&T actually stayed on 3...

Actually, this is an ideal solution for a person like me:

Verizon gets terrible service in my apartment (I haven't tried the other carriers here yet).
Sprint is nonexistent in my mother's house.
AT&T is very flaky at my sister's house.
T-Mobile ...
