Qualcomm Looking to Rid Itself of FLO TV

During its recent quarterly earnings call, Qualcomm CEO Paul Jacobs said that the company is having discussions with others in a bid to get rid of its struggling MediaFLO mobile TV unit. "It will get done in the next year but I don't think I can be much more specific than that," Jacobs said. "A lot of interesting discussions. It's early days." FLO provides live mobile television to properly equipped cell phones and other devices. FLO service is sold on several phones from both AT&T and Verizon Wireless. It uses the old analog television spectrum in the 700MHz range to broadcast its signal. FLO has also tried a direct-to-consumer approach by selling dedicated mobile TV units, but it has had limited success. Qualcomm reported an increase in profits of 4% to $767 million for its most recent quarter.

is it any wonder Flo is struggling?

I don't have a single phone in my store that is capable of picking up the signal. If they really wanted it to become widely adopted, the first step is to put it in more phones. People won't buy a phone solely because it has pay tv capability, but if they happen to buy a phone that does and they stumble across the feature, I think they'd be more likely to try it.
Also, it would help if it was bundled into a data package. Say for a non smart phone like the voyager, if Verizon went back to the concept behind the old premium plans and lumped in video, streaming radio, and navigator with the 30 dollar unlimited data, customers would see more value in that. Right now, who wants to pay 30 a month on a 3G media phone when they could have a smart ph...

Wrong economy to launch this service

Had they launched and grown it in a better economy it would succeed. It is a solid product but the times are wrong for it

The question is why would I want to pay to watch TV on a 3" or 4" screen? In any economy?

I think you are right on but do you think if they made a better pitch to all the carriers even regional and MVNOs that they would have done better. I think they put all of their eggs in ATT and VZ and should have gotten deals with every cell phone car...

I'll wager $2 that T-mobile or Sprint buys up the FLO spectrum and deploys LTE-TDD.

T-mobile is far more likely to do his then Sprint.
