FCC Moves on MSS Bands, Grants Clearwire Extension

Today the Federal Communications Commission announced that it is moving forward to recapture 90MHz of spectrum from the three Mobile Satellite Service (MSS) bands — the 2GHz band, Big LEO band, and L-band. The Commission outlined its plans to change the regulations surrounding the MSS bands so that they can be used for mobile broadband services. The FCC first announces its intent to recover the MSS bands in June. The FCC also granted Clearwire an extension to complete a Basic Trading Areas (BTA) transition in several Florida markets. Clearwire was mandated to swap out some 2.5GHz licenses in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach-Boca Raton areas. The deal has taken longer than Clearwire anticipated due to the number of licensees in those areas, and the FCC changed the deadline from June 2010, to January 15, 2011.

Verizon, AT&T Moving Forward with C-Band 5G Launch This Week Over FAA Objection

Verizon and AT&T this morning refused a request by federal transportation officials to delay this week's planned launch of 5G service in the critical new C Band. [Update: By evening, the two companies agreed to a two-week delay.] The FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) insists that the service could potentially interfere with radio altimeters that planes use to measure distance to the ground in poor weather.

Or is that something only us non-government types are required to do?
