Borders today announced the opening of its own eBook store to compete with Apple's iBooks, Barnes & Noble's Nook, and Amazon's Kindle. In conjunction with the eBook store opening, Borders also announced that it is offering e-reader applications for the BlackBerry and Android platforms. The e-reader application allows BlackBerry and Android device users to search for available titles, authors, or topics; download books directly to their device; and search their own book library. Borders said it has 1.5 million titles available at launch, and is offering thousands of titles for free. Borders already has e-reader apps for both the iPhone and iPad. The applications are free, and can be downloaded directly from Borders.
