LG today demonstrated its mobile digital television receiver for the automotive industry. The receiver will allow devices — in this case, in-car entertainment systems — to receive DTV broadcasts. DTV is a competing standard to Qualcomm's MediaFLO mobile television, and is being offered by television broadcasting companies. It uses existing TV spectrum to offer broadcasts of local TV channels in a given market. The Mobile DTV standard was finalized in late 2009 and can work with cell phones, when properly equipped. Both LG and Samsung have demonstrated this technology in mobile phones, but have yet to bring any final products to market.

I really hope this becomes standard in smartphones!!!

MediaFlo never took off cause it's in way, way too few handsets, and still isn't in any Android smartphones!!! 😡

I just hope MobileDTV takes off and becomes much, much more standard than MediaFlow by the time I qualify for an equipment upgrade (Nov 2011)
MediaFlo was not free. This will at least be free for most content. That means just add the receiver and enjoy...but it also means the return of the dreaded external antenna.
...
I hope so too, Jay! Very exciting.
