Google to Cease Offering Nexus One Via the Web

Today in a blog post written by chief Android architect Andy Rubin, Google announced a number of changes for its Nexus One Android handset. Google said that first it is going to increase the retail availability of the Nexus One with its retail partners both here and abroad. Once it is satisfied with the retail availability of the Nexus One, Google will stop selling it via the web store, which it will close. Rubin said, "While the global adoption of the Android platform has exceeded our expectations, the web store has not. It’s remained a niche channel for early adopters, but it’s clear that many customers like a hands-on experience before buying a phone, and they also want a wide range of service plans to chose from." Sprint and Verizon Wireless both recently cancelled their planned roll-outs of the Nexus One, pointing to superior alternatives instead. Google didn't say where the Nexus One will become available, such as through T-Mobile and AT&T stores, or other outlets such as Best Buy or Radioshack.

Boost Mobile started selling the new Motorola moto g stylus 5G this week. Cricket starts selling the phone today , and AT&T will start sales July 16th.

Of course people prefer hands on experiences before buying something. I didn't have hands on with my Moto Droid prior to buying mine, and neither did the original poster with his Nexus, but those of us on Phone Scoop aren't avg consumers.

Competion Hard to Do in US

I think the concept was good to sell the phone directly to consumers and then you choose a carrier. However, with the US not having universally compatible phones with AT&T on one frequency, T-Mobile on another, and then you have this CDMA thing from Verizon/Sprint that it was hard to get competition in the mix. We I think we the consumers would like is to be able to use the cellular companies as "dump pipes" like is more the case with home broadband where you use whatever device you want. It will happen to the US, but not yet.

Another interesting possibility is if Google could offer phone service using cheaper data only and no contract plans, thou not all carriers offer these type of plans.

They should have just released a 5-band 3G GSM unlocked phone like the Nokia N8. It would be one model that would give purchasers the choice of any GSM network and the phone would be easily swappable between AT&T and T-Mobile.
