Verizon Exploring Possibility of Licensing its 4G Spectrum

Verizon Wireless' CEO Lowell McAdam recently indicated to the Wall Street Journal that the company is giving serious thought to licensing out its 4G spectrum to rural providers. McAdam said the move would help it build out its next-generation Long Term Evolution network to rural regions faster. The smaller regional carriers will have a license to resell Verizon's services, and right now Verizon is open to running those networks itself or allowing the regional carriers to run them. Verizon Wireless is also working out deals that would allow subscribers of smaller carriers to roam onto its LTE network. Verizon Wireless doesn't believe it will make much money by licensing out its 4G spectrum, but does hope to score some goodwill points with the Federal Communications Commission, which is evaluating how to regulate broadband services. Verizon Wireless hopes to launch LTE in 25 to 30 cities by the end of 2010, covering some 100 million people.
