Intel today announced a new version of is Atom chip that is meant specifically for smartphones. Intel says the revised Atom platform offers several benefits over the previous generation, including lower power consumption, smaller footprint, and lower cost. Intel has a lot of ground to make up if it wants to beat rivals that use ARM Holding's chip designs. The Moorestwon Z6 series will be aimed at Android and MeeGo devices. Intel didn't say when the chips would be sampling or widely available to phone makers.

Android + Flash + Atom CPU = Disaster

Before the thing finally sent me over the edge and was auctioned off on eBay, I had a netbook with a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom CPU that couldn't manage to view a web page with even a hint of Flash content without freezing everything up for 15-45 seconds at a time. Seeing as most if not all current Android phones support Flash Lite content and Android 2.2 is slated to support Flash in a much more complete way, coupling Android smartphones with Intel Atom CPUs will be an absolute disaster unless this new line of Atom CPUs will be radically different (i.e., far better performing) than the first Atoms. No smartphone user who quickly and frequently surfs the Web on the go is going to put up with that kind of lackluster performance for very long.
