Google May Bring Turn-By-Turn Directions to 'Other Platforms'

Google has recently indicated that it plans to offer turn-by-turn directions to a number of new platforms, though it didn't specify which. "We did not say we would bring it to iPhone, we said to date we've had it on Android and that in the future it may come to other platforms but did not confirm this will be coming to iPhone at all," said a Google spokesperson in response to reports that it had confirmed an iPhone app. Google first began offering turn-by-turn directions on the Android platform in November. Google is working on a free application that will let users map out point-to-point routes and then have their phone guide them to that location. Google didn't say when the application would become available.

Google is really undercutting...

Correct me if I am wrong (because I've not used Google's turn by turn), but this will pretty much put take Telenav away from most smartphones. Android and iPhone included.

I have been using AT&T navigator for over three years and am kicking myself for the 360+ tax I have spent in that amount of time.

Google maps is a good (albiet with a creepy voice) option because of the street view and the fact that it's free.

I doubt it, because Googles turn by turn is really only accurate within major metropolitan areas. I know, because I've used it.

that i had never sold my Tom Tom on eBay. Google maps is ok but it's taken me on the wrong route a number of times. I never once got lost or was mislead using my tom tom. I've never used Telenav before so i can't say how good that is but damn Google, ...

The real question is will they be allowed to use admob advertising with it

or will steve not approve without iAd? I don't think he'll do this for every app, but with the tiff these two companies are going through.. who knows?

Free nav on other platforms would be a boon for Google though.. more people using their products=more people seeing their ads.. then all they need to do is add tighter integration to android phones and they don't really lose the competative advantage (they get people used to their software and willing to try the OS)

Googles a little different with it's own applications isn't it? I can't remember ever seeing an actual advertisement in Google maps, but I have wondered why some points of interest will pop up before others.

Anyway, who knows? Google doesn't seem ...

Google publicly stated "No Nav for you" in regards to the iPhone. Crap.

I was hoping Google would release it for the iPhone, but hey, you can't win em' all.

I'll just have to enjoy Google layers when my girlfriend is traveling with me. Navigon suits me well for the time being.

According to PCWorld, however, Google has backpedaled on those claims and in fact seems to be distancing itself from the possibility of bringing the service to the iPhone.
