Today Reuters reports that Nokia will delay introducing the next version of its Symbian smartphone platform from the second quarter of this year to some time in the second half of the year. Nokia had published an aggressive roll-out schedule for successive builds of Symbian, with new versions debuting every six months. Today's S60 5th Edition software is equivalent to Symbian^1. Symbian^3, which was to bring a major refresh to the platform's appearance and usability, was set to be available by June 30. Nokia indicated that it will announce a Symbian^3 device by the end of the second quarter, but it won't reach the market until some time in the third quarter. Additionally, Nokia said that it has pushed the introduction of Symbian^4 from the latter half of 2010 to some time in 2011. Nokia's competitors in the smartphone market — Apple, Microsoft, and RIM — are all looking to introduce new system software in the coming months. According to Reuters, Nokia has also slashed the prices of its smartphones by 10%. Nokia's E Series devices saw the deepest price cuts. Nokia drops prices on its handsets at least once per year.

Symbian^3 delayed not Symbian^2

It seems like Symbian^2 was not used by device makers but Symbian^3 is the start of the overhaul that Symbian^4 will continue. The delay is in bringing a Symbian^3 handset.
