Intel Porting Android to Atom Smartphone Processors

PC World is reporting that Intel has been porting the Google Android mobile OS to its Atom processors. Android was originally designed for ARM-based processors, like the Qualcomm Snapdragon processor used the in the Google Nexus One, but the open source nature of the OS allows manufacturers to adapt it to their needs. Acer has already ported Android to Atom-based netbooks, and Intel is reportedly interested in building smartphones based on the processor platform. According to PC World's talk with Renee James, general manager of Intel's software and services group, at the Intel Developer Forum, Intel is trying to be agnostic when it comes to mobile operating systems, so presumably the chipmaker is working to port other mobile systems, like Microsoft's Windows Mobile, to its platforms.
