Today AT&T announced the availability of the Airo Wireless A25is, a rugged handset that has been certified intrinsically safe. The A25is is a Windows Mobile 6.1 device that has a numeric keypad and a 2.8-inch touch display. It has quad-band GSM/EDGE radios, and also includes Bluetooth, GPS, Push-to-Talk and Wi-Fi. The A25is meets MIL-SPEC 810F standards for protection against abuse and environmental conditions. It also has an IP-67 rating against intrusion by moisture, water, and dirt. It can be submerged in five feet of water for up to 30 minutes. The intrinsically safe rating means the phone can be used in dangerous and flammable work environments. It won't produce a spark that could ignite nearby gases. The Airo A25is is for sale via AT&T's business sales channel. Pricing information was not disclosed.

Hmm, doesn't a phone like this belong in Sprint/Nextel?

Certainly seems like this would be a much, much better for for Sprint/Nextel.
Technically, AT&T has one of the largest push to talk networks in the country... they are using Kodiak's RTX technology which works over their whole voice network... So Sprint/Nextel is really not the only, or obvious, choice for ruggadized PTT device...

I365is is our current offering. Ontop of being hopped up a bit (1w boosted signal as just a walkie-talkie) it is also ridiculously priced (somewhere around 1k).

Probably why they didn't disclose...

Nextel has always carried at least one intrinsically-safe phone in their lineup for over ten years. As usual, ATT & VZ are late to the business-oriented party.

BTW, has anyone out there ever seen anyone actually using ATT's or VZ's PTT? I haven't. ...

Where is the "Safe"????

When are carriers going to offer "Idiot" Safe phones?
I have yet to see a phone that some nitwit calls in to customer service with even the most moronic issue that even a chimpanzee on meth could figure out.
Even the elderly with Jitterbug phones have issues. 🙄
