Today Sony Ericsson announced the Aspen, a new Windows Mobile smartphone for the U.K. market that will be among the first to run Windows Mobile 6.5.3. Microsoft says that this incremental update to Windows Mobile brings a number of tweaks to the user interface. The biggest improvement will be in terms of ease-of-use of the new system software. Microsoft notes that WinMo 6.5.3 has capacitive touchscreen and multitouch support; deeper integration of finger-friendly touch controls, negating the need for a stylus; more consistent navigation around the phone's menus; and a new horizontal scroll bar that replaces the tabs. A new magnifier brings touch support to older applications that were previously too small to interact with using a finger. Microsoft also notes that Windows Mobile 6.5.3 offers easier set-up and faster use out of the box. The browser has been updated to improve memory management, smooth out pan and flick gestures, increase zoom and rotation speeds, and decrease page load times. The Aspen itself has a 2.4-inch 240 x 320 display, 3.2 megapixel camera, accelerometer, full QWERTY keyboard, microSD card support and Sony Ericsson's "human curvature" design. It comes in two radio configurations, both have quad-band GSM/EDGE, and there's one with 900/2100MHz HSDPA support and another with 850/900/2100MHz HSDPA support. The Aspen also has aGPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1 (with A2DP).The Aspen is also the latest Greenheart device from Sony Ericsson, which means it was manufactured with the environment in mind. It will go on sale in select markets during the second quarter.
