Today Verizon Wireless announced a new version of its mapping software, VZ Navigator 5.0. The biggest new features include roadside assistance and integrated social networking. The roadside assistance feature allows users to send their location to a dispatcher, who can determine if help is needed and send the right type of help to the user. The software's social networking features include integration with Facebook, so users can share their location information with friends and family in real-time. Other new features include a revised user interface, streamed map content for faster delivery to the handset, more information on points of interest, opt-in crowd sourced traffic reporting, graphic alerts for upcoming road conditions and attributes, and voice search support for BlackBerries and Windows Phones. VZ Navigator 5.0 will first be pushed to the BlackBerry Curve 8530, LG enV Touch, HTC Touch Pro2, and Samsung Omnia starting today. More devices will be supported over the coming weeks. The service costs $10 per month for unlimited access, or $3 for 24 hours of use.
