Apple-Nokia Feud Escalates

The patent spat between Apple and Nokia took another turn yesterday when Apple filed a petition with the International Trade Commission seeking to ban Nokia from importing its devices into the U.S. Nokia filed a similar petition in hopes to block Apple from importing its devices into the European Union. Both companies allege that the other is violating a number of patents regarding cell phone technology. When reached for comment, Nokia spokesperson Mark Durrant told Bloomberg, "Nokia will study the complaint when it is received and continue to defend itself vigorously. However this does not alter the fact that Apple has failed to agree appropriate terms for using Nokia technology and has been seeking a free ride on Nokia’s innovation since it shipped the first iPhone in 2007."

This is all such bull****!

Nokia was making cellular/wireless technology years before Apple even conceived making a mobile device. Just because iPhone became so ****ing popular in the US doesn't mean that Apple has a right to tell the world-wide Nokia what to do. **** Apple!
Same could be said about Nokia!

Nokia's in trouble. They cover a lot of old GSM patents, but as a handset maker they're struggling. They went from having a near global monopoly to being less profitable than Apple. Their platforms are all terrible- S60 has (sadly) stagnated, and Mae...

when apple started concieving the iphone or the number of patents they have violated ... not just nokia's. They are being sued left and right you don't know about it all.
...
you do realize that common sense tells us that if one person starts something. patents it, and sells it, and then another does it after them.. its technically patent theft... so yeha apple is in the wrong if they are usign nokias patents.

Nokia may as well give up and die....

What is Nokia other than a patent troll and maker of cheap disposable handsets? When is the last time anyone gave a crap about a Nokia handset that wasn't prepaid? The N95? Maybe two people cared about that glitchy brick.

Name ONE successful initiative of Nokia's. Ovi? NGage? "Comes With Music?" They've all been miserable failures and beyond stupid in their conceptualization. Let's not even discuss Nokia's genius GPS implementation....

Name ONE successful platform of Nokia's. S60? Maybe 4 years ago. S80? Long dead. Maemo? Oh yeah, Maemo, it's been 3 years and it's still garbage. Even Android makes Maemo look like trash.

I have good memories of my earlier Nokia handsets, but this company has long lost its way.

Get your head out of your a**. Nokia is still the worlds number 1 phone manufacturer. Even if they do get kicked out of the US (which I dont think will happen) it still wont affect anything. The reason why you dont see any high end phones here is ...

Nokia out of the US market within 15 months?

A dreadful prospect in my opinion... The investigation of Nokia's alleged infringements would take about 15 months, and once complete, if fault is found, Apple has sued for Nokia to be banned from sales in the US.

One might say this is decent payback for the suit by Nokia against Apple for alleged infringements, but I think this is just plain dumb. Nokia has been making smartphones for the US market since 2002, and Apple's iPhone just arrived in 2007. It is clear to me that Nokia was already here long before Apple entered the smartphone market, and given this established record for Nokia smartphones and Symbian S60/S80 in the US, and the royalties already paid to Nokia, I feel that Apple doesn't really have a leg to stand on.

If the...

I've never heard of S80? I've been using a Nokia N95 for just over 2yrs, it's kept me happy.

Now with reguards to what you said about Nokia making smartphones for the U.S. since 2002, I think it's sad that recently ATT has refused to carry the BEST...

Nokia has been making phones and technology that runs them decades before Apple even conceived a device that later became an iPhone.
