The Wall Street Journal reports that the new Android phone distributed to Google employees this week will be sold directly to consumers as an unlocked phone as soon as next year. Google will sell the phone instead of carriers, and consumers will need to arrange wireless service separately. The phone is called Nexus One and is made by HTC.

ATT Interesting

I guess this would be one way of getting a Android phone on ATT (if their 3G bands are supported)? 🤨
But I have a feeling this will be offered overseas first.
My thoughts exactly. I am very interested in finally finding a phone to replace my long line of Blackberries. Not that there's anything wrong with them, just time for something new and nothing up to this point has done it for me. The Android series...

Well, its being given to Google employees some time in the next week or so.

As far as AT&T goes, not so much this phone then again maybe, but it is logical that something comes along their way in Android. 88 plus million potential customers plus ...

On Engadget's website, there is an update (Tweet) from John Gruber from Daring Fireball, that the Nexus One phone will support T-Mobile's 3G band.

data plan

if it's an htc device chances are the data plan will be 30.00. if it even can be used on att. which will be interesting as well if they will require a contract. i know the article says it wont be sold by carriers.

i'm curious as to what you folks think about this.

What 3G bands?

Would love to see a phone with 3G bands for both 850, 1700 and 1900. That would be a phone that would be great if unlocked.
I hope they include all north american 3g bands. I'm tired of manufacturers locking the bands to one carrier or another.
According to John Grubner's (from Daring Fireball) source, the Nexus One is going to be compatible to T-Mobile's 3G network.

Verizon LTE support?

Would it be compatible with Verizon LTE?
Will Verizon use SIM CARDS for LTE?
No. The Nexus One Phone is 3G enabled, not 4G (LTE). Yes, Verizon Wireless will have swappable SIM cards for their 4G (LTE) network.
No, it's too early for there to be LTE phones.

So any carrier?

This phone will be able to be activated on any carrier?!
Doubtful, the term unlocked is usually associated with GSM devices, therefore AT&T or T-Mobile... ☹️

Deny!

Deny, deny, deny, deny. Where have I seen this before? Apple denied the iphone until the very last. No surprise here.
