Today Google unveiled a new product for consumers that will let them gather more information about local places. Businesses that have been searched many times on Google will receive barcode stickers from Google and will officially be named Favorite Places on Google. Google said that it has named over 100,000 businesses in some 9,000 U.S. cities in all 50 states. Users will scan the barcode at the entrance of these businesses and will then receive relevant search results, such as reviews, or coupons. Users will also have the ability to star that place as a favorite on Google Maps. In order to participate, end users will need to have a camera on their device and an application that can scan barcodes. Google recommends the Barcode Scanner application for Android phones, and QuickMark, BeeTag, or NeoReader for iPhones.
