Today the European Commission said it is closing a four-year investigation into the pricing practices of Qualcomm's wireless patents and technology. The EU did not impose any fines against Qualcomm, nor did it officially absolve Qualcomm of any wrongdoing. Broadcom, Telefon AB, Ericsson, NEC, Nokia, Panasonic Mobile Communications, and Texas Instruments had all complained in the EU that Qualcomm's royalty fees for licensing patents were too high and prevented competition from entering the market. Despite the long investigation, the EU has yet to make any formal rulings, and at this point all of the complainants have withdrawn their complaints or plan to withdraw them. The EU has decided to cease incurring further costs and is closing the investigation.
