Qualcomm Intros New 1GHz and Multi-Mode Chips

Today Qualcomm introduced two new lines of mobile processor chips. The MSM7x30 family targets multimedia applications and will support 3D gaming, and the OpenGL ES 2.0 and OpenVG 1.1 APIs. Other media features these chips will support include 720p video capture at 30 frames per second, 5.1 surround sound, 12 megapixel cameras, and GPS. The MSM7x30 chips will support Android, Windows Mobile, Brew and Symbian handsets. There will be two different variants, one that supports HSPA+ networks, and another that supports HSPA+/EV-DO Rev. B and SV-DO. The processors in these chips will have a minimum spec of 800MHz and can ramp up to 1GHz when needed depending on the applications being used. The will be built into devices by the end of 2010. Qualcomm also announced that it is sampling a series of multi-mode 3G/LTE and dual-carrier HSPA+ chipsets. The MDM family of chips will be able to use both 3G and 4G networks, and could be used in devices sold by Verizon Wireless as it transitions from its EVDO Rev. A network to LTE.
