Motorola and Verizon Wireless Announce the Droid

Today Motorola and Verizon Wireless introduced the Droid, a new Android phone that runs the 2.0 (Eclair) operating system. The Droid is a sideways slider with 3.7-inch WVGA touch display (480 x 854 pixels) and full QWERTY keyboard. It has EVDO Rev. A, GPS, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and Wi-Fi radios on board. The camera rates 5 megapixels and has dual-LED flash, autofocus, image stabilization and DVD-quality (720 x 480 pixels) video capture at 24 frames per second. The Droid is boxed with a 16GB microSD card and runs a Cortex A8 processor. The Droid takes advantage of many of the features of Android 2.0, which includes an integrated email inbox with support for multiple Gmail and Exchange accounts; SMS and MMS search; double-tap zoom in the browser with support for HTML5; improved camera software; and improved on-screen keyboard software. It runs a new Google Maps Navigation application (in beta) that offers voice guidance and 3D navigation. The Droid will not run Motorola's MOTOBLUR, and instead is a stock "with Google" Android device with no UI customization. Verizon also said that all of its future Android devices will be released under the "Droid" branding. The Droid goes on sale November 6 for $200 with new contract.
